Browsing around a hardware store for new and unusual materials is something I really enjoy, so when I came across these wooden corbels I was really excited because I knew they would be great for Easter decorating.
The corbels are actually ‘acorns’, meant for decorating wooden hand rails and balustrade but if you look carefully, you’ll see they can be eggs in cups too!
Use them to decorate a shelf, mantle or as a table centerpiece at Easter time
you will need:
wooden acorn corbels (available from the hardware or specialist timber yards)
acrylic Paints in colours of your choice, I used Jo Sonja’s Artists Colours in Warm White, Brown Earth and Mouse
old tooth brush
hand saw
sandpaper
clear varnish
how to:
Start by sawing off the protruding dowel piece at the bottom of each acorn then sand smooth
Paint the ‘egg’ (I used Mouse). You may need to apply two or three coats to achieve good coverage.
Take the toothbrush and dip it in a small amount of water, then the white paint. Flick the bristles over the egg to create a speckled effect. Repeat this step using Brown earth for contrasting speckles
Paint the ‘egg cup’ next, here I used warm White – again you may need a few coats. Dry the eggs well before varnishing (leave overnight or use a hair dryer to speed the process)
Finish by tying each egg with a fancy ribbon
