jack -o’- lanterns
On Halloween, a fun way to light up your paths is with pumpkin Jack-o’-Lanterns. Faces are fun to carve but holes made with a drill are much easier and allow more light to show through.
Your finished pumpkins will look fresh for a day or two, so get started early and save time by carving them the day before.
how to:
1.Using a sharp knife, cut a large circle in the top of the pumpkin inserting the knife at angles so the ‘lid’ can be removed. Take your time with this, it’s definitely not a job for the kids. To stabilize the pumpkin, it helps to place it on a folded, damp tea towel
2.Once the lid is off, scoop out the flesh to create a wall around 2.5cm thick. For this you can either use a pumpkin scraper which you get from kitchenware stores or else use a large spoon
3. Using a drill with a hole saw bit, drill out several holes around the pumpkin to allow the tea light candle glow to show through
Note: never leave the pumpkin ‘lid’ on while candles are burning and always place them in a ‘safe’ area
