texture

WG1191.jpgClean-lined minimalism is definitely a popular design trend, but if not done well, the sparse look of sleek materials and simple styling can be a little cold and unwelcoming, not to mention noisy.  So to add some much needed warmth, as well as bring noise levels down, layer up with cosy textures and sensual style.

Smooth, hard surfaces are a natural choice for a variety of furnishings in our homes for their contemporary appeal, as well as practicality and ability to ‘open’ up a space.  Be warned however, because too many slick surfaces can appear clinical and really accentuate noise levels – especially with busy families.

The secret to making a room look fabulous is to have a good variety of interesting elements using a combination of different materials.  A room may appear plain, even dull if all the materials and surface finishes you have used appear too similar.  It will lack dimension and leave nothing to excite the eye.
But, introduce a few different textures, and the room will instantly have more warmth and sensual appeal.

A simple way to counter-balance a dull room is to add texture and layers in contrast to what is already there. The placement of something of the opposite texture, say rough with smooth will really help to exaggerate both surfaces, therefore allowing the eye to notice each more clearly.

textural elements you might like to add

By adding a plush, shaggy rug to a polished timber or tiled floor, you will not only add visual interest to the room, but will also help to reduce noise levels.  A rug, no matter what it is made from can help to define a sitting area, therefore adding an extra layer of comfort and style

Cushions and throws are affordable and can be purchased or made from a wide variety of shimmery as well as chunky fabrics.  These really can add so much life to an otherwise plain sofa no matter what it’s made from and can be found to suit your style, from modern through to traditional

Windows often contribute to a large part of the room and are seldom ‘dressed’ to their full potential.  Any window can benefit from some kind of treatment, whether curtains and/or blinds and by combining the practical with the decorative elements, you can not only keep the heat in and cool out (or vice versa) but you can also add a lot of flair to an otherwise plain space. Try hanging sheer fabric panels for gorgeous light diffusion and privacy during the day, or heavier drapes and blinds in crunchy silks or textured weaves for a rich dramatic effect.  Consider poles and fittings too as these can be hidden away discretely or placed on show as part of the overall look and make a real style statement of their own

TIP: Rugs made from natural materials such as sisal, coir and wool all add visual interest to a room pile as well as comfort and can help to reduce noise
